Heterozygous mice suffer hearing loss and have tectorial membranes with a thin limbal attachment zone, missing marginal band and Hensen's stripe and large holes in the main body of the matrix. The subtectorial space above the inner hair cells is also enlarged. Heterozygous mice show elevated neural thresholds, broadened neural tuning and a decrease in sensitivity at the tip of the neural tuning curve.
