Heterozygote viable. Homozygote early developmental lethal (does not gastrulate). These mice are to be used as part of a sensitised genetic screen to detect mutants affecting mammalian pattern determination. They will help with scientific understanding of axis formation in mammals. This stock has an insertion of Beta-geo into exon 2 of Nodal, providing a LacZ marker allele of Nodal as well as being null for Nodal. This mutation has been maintained congenically on a 129/SvEv background. Nodal is required for specification of the AVE, induction of gastrulation, induction of at least some endoderm lineages and for specification of the L/R axis.
